Aster DM Healthcare and Quality Care India have formally begun operations as a combined entity, creating one of India's largest hospital networks and sharpening their focus on taking advanced medical care beyond the country's major metropolitan markets.
The merged company backed by PE firm Blackstone, will operate as Aster Quality Care, bringing together four hospital brands — Aster DM, CARE Hospitals, Evercare and KIMSHEALTH — under a network of 39 hospitals across 28 cities with more than 10,600 beds. The group will continue to be led by Executive Chairman Dr Azad Moopen, while Varun Khanna takes charge as Managing Director and Group CEO.
The merger is aimed at building scale in regions where demand for quality healthcare is rising rapidly but access to advanced treatment remains limited. With a strong presence across South and Central India, the company plans to deepen investments in specialist services, medical technology and centres of excellence in tier-2 and tier-3 cities, reducing the need for patients to travel to metros for complex procedures.
Cities such as Nagpur, Aurangabad, Vijayawada, Guntur, Bhubaneswar, Raipur, Nagercoil, Kolhapur, Kannur, Kasaragod and Kottakkal have been identified as key growth markets. The company's strategy builds on previous investments that introduced advanced technologies, including LINAC-based radiation therapy systems and robotic surgery programmes, in non-metro locations.
The combined platform also plans to accelerate investments in high-end clinical infrastructure. These include Gamma Knife and stereotactic radiosurgery systems, 10 robotic surgical platforms and 12 additional LINAC-based radiation therapy systems across smaller cities. The goal is to make specialised cancer treatment and other advanced procedures more accessible closer to patients' homes.
Management expects the merger to generate synergies across clinical collaboration, technology adoption, procurement, digital health and operational efficiency. Doctors across the network are expected to work more closely through shared protocols, multidisciplinary consultations and integrated centres of excellence, helping standardise care across locations.
Calling the merger a defining milestone, Moopen said the combination creates a stronger institution built on shared clinical expertise and patient care values. Khanna said the immediate priority is seamless integration while ensuring continuity for patients, doctors, employees and partners.
Looking ahead, Aster Quality Care plans to expand its bed capacity to more than 15,000 over the next few years. Backed by a workforce of over 45,000 healthcare professionals, the company is positioning itself to capture growing healthcare demand outside India's largest cities while creating additional employment opportunities across the sector.
