Meta Platforms NASDAQ:META, the social-media and digital-advertising company operating Facebook and Instagram, surged approximately 6.6% in Monday's regular-session trading as of 12:15 p.m. ET as confidence improved across major AI-spending companies. Amazon's stronger-than-expected cloud growth and $3 trillion valuation milestone encouraged investors to reconsider whether extensive infrastructure investment can produce sufficiently rapid revenue growth. Meta had previously faced pressure after raising the lower end of its annual capital-expenditure outlook.
Meta expects 2026 capital spending between $130 billion and $145 billion, compared with its previous range of $125 billion to $145 billion. At the beginning of the year, the company had forecast between $115 billion and $135 billion. Spending is directed toward data centers, processors and other systems supporting Meta's artificial-intelligence products and advertising operations. Analysts have estimated that Meta's free cash flow could decline sharply as infrastructure investment accelerates.
The midpoint of Meta's current capital-spending range is $137.5 billion, representing an increase of $7.5 billion from the initial $125 billion midpoint. Monday's rally suggests investors were placing greater weight on the possibility that AI infrastructure can strengthen advertising products and services than on the immediate cash-flow cost. However, Amazon's NASDAQ:AMZN cloud results do not establish that Meta will produce equivalent returns because the companies monetize infrastructure through different business models. Investors may now assess whether Meta can demonstrate measurable revenue or engagement benefits while completing its larger spending program.
