Amazon.com (AMZN, Financials), the e-commerce and cloud computing corporation, is rejigging its artificial intelligence strategy by winding down a number of marquee models and focusing resources on a new frontier system.

The restructure represents a narrowing of the field of AI development as Amazon tries to catch up with rivals developing more sophisticated general-purpose models.

The corporation will likely continue to support Nova models already utilized in production. Amazon will offer guidance and migration choices as it updates its product selection to help restrict impact to organizations that depend on existing technology, he said.

Amazon is also redirecting research and development funding to the frontier-model effort. The changes include employment cuts in its artificial general intelligence section and a sharper focus of resources under top researchers.

The plan could enable Amazon to focus more computer power, expertise and budget on fewer advanced projects. But scaling back investment in existing models could generate short-term uncertainty for customers considering Amazon's AI solutions.

The move follows big tech companies spending more on infrastructure and competing to build models that have stronger reasoning and enterprise capabilities.

Investors will now be looking for specifics on the new model, strategies for migrating customers and the financial implications of Amazon's changed AI strategy.
