Alphabet (GOOG, Financials), the technology company behind Google Search, YouTube and Google Cloud, said Google Search reached its highest usage ever during Tuesday's World Cup knockout match.

The spike came after Argentina completed a comeback win, with Cristian Romero and Lionel Messi scoring in the match.

Google said search activity hit a record right after Argentina's winning goal. The company did not give exact traffic numbers, but said it saw its highest queries per second at that moment.

The top search after the game was "argentina vs egypt." Other global searches included questions about Lionel Messi, Argentina's next opponents and World Cup rules.

For investors, the record shows how major live events still pull huge audiences into Google's search engine. That matters because Search remains Alphabet's core business and a key driver of advertising revenue.

The next focus will be whether World Cup traffic and broader search demand help support Alphabet's growth in upcoming quarters.
