Strategy Inc. NASDAQ:MSTR, a company known for holding a large corporate Bitcoin (BTC-USD) position, raised about $467 million through common-stock sales as management moved to strengthen the company's liquidity. A regulatory filing dated July 13 showed that Strategy did not purchase or sell any Bitcoin during the seven days ended July 12. Instead, the company increased its cash reserves to roughly $3 billion, suggesting that common equity remains its main funding source despite recent efforts to expand its financing options.
The equity issuance followed Strategy's overhaul of the financial framework supporting its Bitcoin strategy, which gave management more flexibility to sell Bitcoin, repurchase securities and maintain liquidity. Strategy's preferred shares continue to trade below the levels that would make additional issuance attractive, limiting a funding channel the company had hoped could reduce its dependence on common stock. Investors may therefore continue to assess whether future capital raising could place additional pressure on existing shareholders through further equity issuance.
The filing came after Strategy announced a $216 million Bitcoin sale the previous week under its new capital-management framework, raising concerns that one of Bitcoin's largest and historically price-insensitive buyers could become less active in the market. However, the absence of additional Bitcoin sales during the latest reporting period may reassure some investors that the earlier transaction was tactical rather than the beginning of regular disposals, although questions remain over how the company will finance future purchases. Strategy shares fell 2.7% to $92.10 on Monday, while Bitcoin declined about 3% to $62,200, leaving the stock down almost 80% over the past year compared with a 47% decline in Bitcoin.
