Texas-based Excelerate Energy company has sent its latest floating terminal to Aqaba port to supply gas to Jordan and Egypt to help face growing summer demand.
The floating storage and regasification unit (FSRU) will receive around 750 million cubic feet of gas per day from foreign suppliers and transfer them to the two Arab countries, the Saudi Asharq Business news website reported.
Under an agreement finalised recently by the two governments, Egypt will receive 450 million feet per day while Jordan will get 300 million cubic feet per day, the report said, citing an unnamed Egyptian government official.
“The FSRU’s operating contract will continue until December, and it is currently being connected to the facilities in the port of Aqaba to conduct operational tests, as it is a modern ship that was recently launched by the US company,” the report said.
Egypt, a major Arab energy consumer, has recently contracted for 23 gas shipments for July to fuel its power facilities, according to the report, which said gas demand for the power sector has surged to 4.8 million cubic feet per day from 3.8 billion in May.
Consumption is projected to increase further to around 5.1 billion cubic feet per day in August due to high temperatures, the report said.
“Total gas demand in Egypt is expected to rise to around 7.9 billion cubic feet per day in August from 7.2 billion in the same month last year.”
Both Egypt and Jordan import gas from nearby Israel and other countries but they have plans to reduce such imports by increasing domestic production.
In October 2025, Excelerate Energy had signed a $450 million contract with Iraq to deploy an FSRU in the Southern Iraq port of Khor Zubair by mid-2026 but the plan was postponed due to regional tensions.
