The Nikkei 225 Index rose 1.2% to above 64,900, while the broader Topix Index gained 0.8% to 3,950 on Tuesday, recovering part of last week's losses as investors returned from a holiday-extended weekend, with technology stocks leading the advance.
The recent selloff in semiconductor and artificial intelligence-related shares showed signs of easing after US chipmakers posted overnight gains.
Leading technology performers in Japan included Kioxia Holdings (3.4%), Advantest (0.8%), Taiyo Yuden (0.9%), Ibiden Co (3%), and Fujikura (0.9%).
Financial and consumer stocks also moved higher, including Mitsubishi UFJ (0.8%), Sumitomo Mitsui (0.9%), and Fast Retailing (1.3%).
Meanwhile, investors continued to monitor ongoing hostilities in the Middle East, which drove oil prices higher and reignited concerns over inflation and the possibility of interest rate hikes.
