Jim Cramer said he plans to sell all of his Bitcoin holdings, citing his view that quantum computing could break Bitcoin’s security mechanisms in about three years. According to Odaily, IBM Chairman and CEO Arvind Krishna said in a July 30 interview that quantum computing may challenge modern cryptography within the next three to four years.
Google Quantum AI estimated in a paper published in March that fewer than 500,000 physical qubits would be needed to break the related cryptography, about one-twentieth of earlier estimates. Physical qubit counts in current quantum systems remain in the hundreds to thousands, and the number of highly reliable logical qubits is limited. Researchers estimate that about 30% of Bitcoin’s supply, or 6 million to 7 million BTC, is held in addresses with exposed public keys.
