China's commerce ministry said Tuesday that it will impose a preliminary antidumping ruling against Canadian pea starch, alleging the imports cause "material injury" to the domestic industry.

Importers of Canadian pea starch must deposit a 73.5% security margin with Chinese customs from July 1, said the Ministry of Commerce.

The probe, launched last August, came after authorities received complaints from six domestic producers claiming that a surge of underpriced Canadian imports heavily undercut local market prices between 2021 and 2024. Canada is one of China's top foreign suppliers of pea starch, exporting nearly 20 million kilograms to the country in 2024.
