Huawei Technologies' planned return to the international smartphone market with a Malaysia launch could pave the way for a wider global rollout, says Ivan Lam, senior analyst at Counterpoint Research. Huawei is set to introduce the Pura 90 series in Malaysia next week, bringing a 5G-equivalent smartphone to overseas markets for the first time since its global chip supply was cut off. Lam says the move shows that Huawei has overcome some technical hurdles posed by U.S. sanctions that cut off access to global chip supply chains. If successful, Huawei could plot a path to a full international return in the smartphone market, Lam says.
