Japanese household spending in May fell 0.4% from a year earlier, internal affairs ministry data showed on Tuesday, versus the median market forecast for a 2.5% drop.

On a seasonally adjusted, month-on-month basis, spending increased 3.7%, versus an estimated 1.4% rise.
