Italian energy group Eni MIL:ENI said on Monday it had successfully begun production from its Sabratha Compression project with Libya's National Oil Corporation (NOC), a strategic offshore development aimed at increasing gas output.

  • The project will help counteract the natural decline of the Bahr Essalam gas field.

  • The project is expected to increase gas production by about 800 million cubic metres per year, plus associated condensates.

  • A new 1,600-ton compression module with new compression trains will be installed on the offshore Sabratha platform.

  • The new facilities have a total capacity of around 440 million standard cubic feet per day.

  • The gas will support Libya's domestic electricity production and exports to Italy via the GreenStream pipeline.
