When we launched the GuruFocus Value Investing Contest earlier this year, we hoped contributors would bring us a diverse collection of differentiated investment ideas. They certainly have.

Now that we are approaching the halfway point of the year, it seems like a good moment to pause and see how those ideas have performed.

The results so far have been stronger than I expected. From a field of 17 contest submissions, four have already more than doubled from their starting prices, while several others have produced respectable gains. Equally important, a number of ideas have struggled, reminding us that even well-researched investment theses require the market to agree with them.

To keep the comparison consistent, the returns below are measured from the same reference point used throughout the contest: the January 15 closing price. Returns are approximate price returns and are adjusted for normal corporate actions where applicable.

Four Early Doubles

The standout performers so far have been:

  • Entravision Communications (hotlinekosmonosy)
  • Micron Technology (Nauman Khan)
  • Sezzle (Akim Guerreiro)
  • Astera Labs (Mayur Bendre)

Seeing four ideas achieve the original double objective in less than six months is remarkable. Whether they remain there is, of course, another question.

The More Interesting Story

The more interesting observation, however, is not only which stocks have done well.

Looking across the leaderboard, one pattern stands out. The market has generally rewarded companies where the original investment thesis has begun to show up in reported financial results or visible business momentum.

Micron's AI-driven memory cycle has translated into sharply higher earnings power. Sezzle has continued to show that profitable growth in buy now, pay later can be far more powerful than the market initially assumed. Entravision's move suggests investors are beginning to recognize value beyond the legacy media label. Astera Labs, meanwhile, has benefited from strong demand for AI infrastructure and connectivity.

By contrast, many of the weaker performers remain plausible long-term ideas. Companies such as Archer Aviation, Camping World, Nike and Adobe all have arguments that may still play out over time. But in each case, the market has either questioned the timing, the earnings trajectory or the degree of execution still required.

In other words, the market has been rewarding proof rather than promise. That does not necessarily tell us who will ultimately win the contest. It simply tells us what the maket has been willing to pay for so far in 2026.

Looking Ahead

Although several submissions have already exceeded the original goal of doubling, the contest itself will be judged over the full twelve months following publication.

Today's leaderboard is therefore exactly what it should be: a mid-year snapshot rather than a final result. Markets have a habit of changing their minds over the course of a year. Some of today's leaders may give back a significant portion of their gains, while some of today's laggards may yet prove their authors right.

That is precisely what makes following the contest so interesting.
