Anthropic is reportedly in early talks with Samsung Electronics (SSNLF) to become a potential manufacturing partner for a custom artificial intelligence chip, according to The Information, citing people familiar with the plan. The project appears to still be in the early stages, with Anthropic still deciding what the processor should do, how powerful it could be, and how it may fit into a server system. The move could suggest that Anthropic is looking at more ways to strengthen its AI infrastructure as demand for generative AI services continues to rise.
Anthropic told The Information that Amazon.com NASDAQ:AMZN's Trainium chip, Google's tensor processing units, and Nvidia NASDAQ:NVDA's graphics processors will remain central to its computing strategy, while the company declined to comment on its reported chip plans. Samsung also declined to comment to the news site. This means Anthropic's possible custom-chip effort may not replace its current compute partners, but could instead become another potential layer in its longer-term hardware strategy.
The report comes as AI companies are trying to diversify chip supplies to support growing demand for their services. OpenAI last month unveiled its first custom AI chip with Broadcom NASDAQ:AVGO, aiming to tailor the hardware used to run its models more efficiently. If Anthropic moves forward with Samsung, it could possibly mark another sign that leading AI developers are becoming more active in shaping the hardware behind their models.
