Alibaba Group Holding NYSE:BABA shares jumped about 6% in Hong Kong trading Monday after the company introduced Qwen3.8-Max, its latest flagship artificial intelligence model, as competition among Chinese AI developers intensifies.
Alibaba said the new model contains 2.4 trillion parameters, a measure of the number of learned settings within an AI system. The company said Qwen3.8-Max performed competitively against leading global models and surpassed Moonshot's Kimi K3 across several tests. Alibaba plans to make the model's weights available for public download next week.
The launch adds to Alibaba's broader push into AI infrastructure and cloud services. The company has been expanding its Qwen ecosystem while developing tools for AI agents and improving cloud infrastructure. Alibaba Cloud also introduced new agent-focused technologies at the World Artificial Intelligence Conference in July.
Alibaba's latest move comes as Chinese companies including Baidu NASDAQ:BIDU and Tencent (TCEHY) compete for AI customers alongside U.S. developers. The Qwen3.8-Max rollout could give Alibaba another way to expand its AI presence, while the stock's gain shows investors are watching its model development closely.
