Alphabet (GOOGL, Financials), the parent company of Google and a major provider of search, advertising and cloud services, retained an Outperform rating from TipRanks with a $406 price target.
Alphabet's superior operating margins in search, advertising and Google Cloud were shown by the investigation. These companies are still earning the cash that is required to pay for big investments in AI infrastructure.
The bank sheet of Alphabet also allows management to fund data centers, procure sophisticated CPUs and continue buying back shares without requiring much outside financing.
The tradeoff is higher spending in the near future. Building AI systems needs huge investments in servers, power and networking equipment which might weigh on free cash flow and short-term profitability.
Another limitation is hardware shortages. Demand for Google Cloud and AI services remains strong, but the lack of computing capacity may slow the conversion of signed contracts into revenue.
Wall Street is still largely favorable on the stock. The analysts' latest ratings are 29 Buys, five Holds and no Sells out of 34. The average price forecast for the next 12 months is $437.79, suggesting around 22% upside. Investors will now be watching to see if Alphabet can grow capacity and keep the profits that are the backbone of its AI strategy.
