Intel NASDAQ:INTC plans to invest $5.7 billion to expand its manufacturing site in Leixlip, Ireland, strengthening production of Xeon server processors and future chips built for AI, cloud and enterprise workloads.

The project will upgrade existing fabrication facilities, install new equipment and expand the plant's automated track system. Intel said the changes will connect separate campus modules into a faster, more integrated production network.

Intel designs and manufactures processors used in PCs, data centers, networking systems and AI infrastructure. Its foundry business is also trying to win more outside customers by producing chips for other companies.

The investment will support Xeon 6 and future Xeon processors built on Intel 3 technology. Intel Foundry chief Naga Chandrasekaran said the project will increase output and help maximize capacity at the Leixlip campus.

The expansion also supports the European Union's push to increase domestic semiconductor production and reduce dependence on overseas supply chains.
