Meta Platforms (META, Financials), the technology corporation that owns Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp, is bolstering its artificial intelligence leadership with the hire of long-time Amazon Web Services CEO Dave Brown.
The move signals Meta is serious about building out its own AI cloud product, though Brown might alternatively focus on extending the company's internal AI infrastructure, Wedbush added.
Brown is departing AWS after almost 19 years. He helped launch Amazon's EC2 cloud service and most recently managed its compute and machine-learning units, Bedrock and SageMaker.
The hire supports the assumption that Meta is still dedicated to extending its AI infrastructure, Wedbush analyst Matt Bryson said. There's no sign the company is pulling back on capital spending or changing its strategy because of excess data center capacity, he said.
The hiring comes as major tech companies rush to construct bigger AI platforms and obtain the computational power needed for ever-more-complex models.
Meta has continued to invest in AI infrastructure and sees experienced cloud executives as a vital part of its long-term strategy.
Investors will look for more signs that Meta aims to extend its AI offerings beyond its consumer platforms into enterprise cloud services.
