Meta Platforms (META, Financials), the technology company behind Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp, reportedly plans to hire a senior Amazon Web Services executive as it expands its artificial intelligence infrastructure.
Dave Brown, a senior vice president at Amazon's cloud division, is expected to leave the company at the end of July after nearly 19 years. He will reportedly join Meta and report to infrastructure chief Santosh Janardhan.
Brown is expected to focus on Meta's data center build-out as the company adds computing capacity for AI models and related products.
The move also supports speculation that Meta could eventually offer cloud services to outside customers. CEO Mark Zuckerberg said in May that a cloud business was under consideration, although the company currently expects to use most of its computing capacity internally.
Meta has made infrastructure a central part of its AI strategy. Its Meta Compute initiative is designed to plan the development of large-scale computing capacity over time.
For investors, Brown's experience could help Meta manage one of the largest spending programs in the technology industry. The company expects capital expenditures of $125 billion to $145 billion this year.
The next catalyst will be Meta's upcoming earnings report, where investors will look for updates on AI spending and cloud plans.
