Microsoft NASDAQ:MSFT surged 15.5% after fiscal fourth-quarter earnings delivered both a fundamental and technical breakout, with accelerating Azure growth pushing shares decisively above a closely watched long-term trend line. The move suggests investors are becoming more confident that Microsoft's enormous AI infrastructure spending can translate into sustained cloud growth.
Shares closed at $451.10 after reaching an intraday high of $458.69, moving above the 200-day average of $433.83 following weeks of consolidation near $390 to $400. Microsoft also cleared its 50-day and 100-day averages, both near $398, while trading volume exceeded 110 million shares, more than twice the prior session's level.
That participation strengthens the breakout, although technicians will now watch whether Microsoft can deliver consecutive closes above the 200-day average.
Microsoft reported adjusted earnings of $4.74 per share as quarterly revenue increased 18% to $90 billion. Intelligent Cloud revenue rose 32% to $39.3 billion, while Azure and other cloud-services revenue accelerated 43%. Commercial remaining performance obligations surged 84% to $678 billion, providing greater visibility into future cloud revenue.
Demand still exceeds available Azure capacity, but Microsoft said efficiency and deployment improvements allowed new CPU and GPU capacity to be monetized rapidly during the quarter. The company expects Azure growth of approximately 45% in constant currency during the September quarter, indicating that momentum could strengthen further.
Investor Takeaway On Microsoft Stock
The immediate test is whether Microsoft can hold above $433.83 after the initial earnings excitement fades. A retreat below that level would weaken the technical signal, while sustained closes above it could turn former resistance into support.
Fundamentally, investors should monitor Azure growth, backlog conversion and Microsoft Cloud gross margin, which fell to 65% as AI infrastructure and product usage increased. Microsoft expects first-quarter revenue of $89.85 billion to $90.95 billion and capital expenditures exceeding $50 billion. Management also expects fiscal 2027 capex to rise, making cloud efficiency and free-cash-flow durability critical to supporting the stock's renewed momentum.
