Micron Technology (MU, Financials), a U.S. semiconductor company that makes memory and storage chips for data centers, phones, computers and vehicles, has signed long-term supply agreements with several companies in the automotive industry.
The group includes Qualcomm, Harman, Visteon, DENSO, Hyundai Mobis, Astemo and JOYNEXT.
The deals are aimed at securing the memory and storage components needed for newer vehicles, where chips support driver-assistance systems, digital dashboards, connectivity and other software-based features.
For automakers and suppliers, the appeal is straightforward. Longer agreements can make it easier to plan production, manage costs and avoid the kind of chip shortages that disrupted the industry in recent years.
Micron also benefits from better visibility into future demand as carmakers add more computing power to each vehicle.
The company is already seeing strong demand from AI data centers, but it expects growth to spread into cars, smartphones, premium PCs and robotics.
The next thing to watch is whether these agreements lead to faster growth in Micron's automotive business and more design wins on future vehicle platforms.
