Nvidia NASDAQ:NVDA could face additional financial risk if it provides backing for a large OpenAI data center project in Ohio, although the arrangement may strengthen its long-term position in the artificial intelligence market, according to a research note from Wedbush.

The brokerage said reports of a potential $250 billion financial backstop would deepen Nvidia's relationship with one of the world's leading AI model developers. However, it cautioned that such financing could leave the chipmaker more exposed if AI demand weakens or OpenAI loses momentum against competing developers.

Wedbush added that the proposed project is likely to receive support from the U.S. government, noting that major AI infrastructure investments have remained a strategic priority. The Ohio facility is part of a broader AI data center initiative that could eventually exceed $500 billion in total development costs, including semiconductor hardware.

Despite the added risks, Wedbush maintained a constructive long-term view on Nvidia, saying continued expansion of large-scale AI data centers should support demand for the company's AI accelerators and computing hardware while reinforcing its leadership in the AI infrastructure market.
