Nvidia NASDAQ:NVDA is reportedly cutting host-memory capacity in its upcoming Vera Rubin systems as surging memory p) is reportedly crices and tight supply reshape product design, while passing higher component costs into consumer GPU prices. The changes suggest Nvidia's purchasing power cannot fully shield it from an industry-wide memory squeeze.
Wedbush analyst Matt Bryson said memory now represents roughly 29% of system cost, above Nvidia's preferred 20%. The Vera CPU configuration in the NVL72 is therefore expected to carry 96GB rather than the previously planned 192GB, reducing reported rack memory to about 28TB from 55TB. GPU-side HBM4 capacity would remain unchanged at 20.7TB.
As we noted previously, we see this apparent choice by NVDA as predominantly dictated by supply vs. cost with NVDA simply not having enough memory to support its targeted volumes (despite having committed more capital than any other company to supply chain certainty), Bryson wrote.
Nvidia's public Vera Rubin specifications currently list 72 Rubin GPUs, 36 Vera CPUs and 20.7TB of HBM4 per NVL72 rack, underscoring that the reported adjustment is concentrated in CPU-attached memory rather than the premium HBM supporting AI acceleration. Nvidia says Rubin can deliver up to 10 times Blackwell's inference throughput per megawatt and one-tenth the cost per million tokens.
Consumer buyers face the other side of the squeeze. Wedbush cited reported graphics-card price increases of 20% to 30%, following rises of 10% to 15% in January and May. That suggests Nvidia is protecting margins by passing higher GDDR costs downstream rather than absorbing them.
Investor takeaway on Nvidia stock
Nvidia's August 26 earnings report is the next major test. Management has guided for fiscal second-quarter revenue of $91 billion, plus or minus 2%, and a 75% non-GAAP gross margin.
Investors should watch whether memory inflation pressures margins, delays Rubin shipments or constrains gaming volumes. Stable HBM4 capacity and continued data-centre demand would limit the damage. Further specification cuts, weaker consumer sell-through or additional price increases could signal that memory availability, rather than GPU demand, is becoming the binding constraint on Nvidia's growth.
