Space Exploration Technologies Corp. (SPCX, Financials), the rocket, satellite and artificial-intelligence company, sharply increased its purchases of Tesla energy-storage systems as it raced to add more computing power.
SpaceX bought approximately $295 million of Tesla Megapacks during the second quarter, bringing its first-half purchases to $329 million, according to a regulatory filing.
The battery systems are being installed around the company's Colossus data centers near Memphis, where SpaceX is expanding the power and cooling needed for its AI infrastructure.
For Tesla, the orders show how its energy business can benefit from the enormous electricity requirements created by artificial intelligence. Megapacks are designed to store power for data centers, utilities and other large commercial projects.
The spending also highlights the growing financial links between companies controlled by Elon Musk. SpaceX had previously disclosed purchasing $506 million of Megapacks and $131 million of Cybertrucks from Tesla through the end of 2025.
Musk said SpaceX is targeting as much as 20 gigawatts of power and cooling capacity by the end of 2027.
Investors will watch whether SpaceX's AI expansion creates a meaningful new source of recurring demand for Tesla's energy-storage business.
