Tesla NASDAQ:TSLA expanded its Model Y lineup in the U.S. and Puerto Rico with a longer Model Y L, adding 5.9 inches and a third row to target family SUV buyers.
The Model Y L comes as a 2x2x2 6-seater, with heated, power-reclining back-row seats and child-seat anchors. The second row swaps the bench for 2 captain chairs with heating, ventilation, powered armrests and one-touch fold.
The extra space comes at a higher price. Tesla listed the Model Y L at $62K, compared with roughly $40K to $60K for the standard Model Y. The vehicle first launched in China, where longer vehicles have stronger demand, and later expanded to Australia, New Zealand and Southeast Asia.
the launch gives Tesla another way to refresh its best-selling SUV without a full redesign, while leaning into U.S. demand for 3-row family vehicles. The next question is whether Tesla follows its usual playbook with cheaper Model Y L trims to broaden demand.
