Neon has secured the release rights to Artificial, an upcoming film focused on OpenAI and Chief Executive Officer Sam Altman, adding another high-profile technology story to the independent distributor's lineup. The movie follows what IMDb describes as the confusing firing and rehiring cycle involving Altman, with Andrew Garfield set to portray the OpenAI chief.
The acquisition comes after Amazon.com NASDAQ:AMZN dropped the film earlier in June and began screening it for potential buyers. Artificial had previously been expected to receive a theatrical release through Amazon's Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer studio, while Amazon separately agreed in February to invest $50 billion in OpenAI.
For investors, the deal could highlight how the artificial intelligence boom is increasingly shaping entertainment narratives beyond public markets. Neon, founded in 2017 by Tom Quinn and Tim League, has built credibility with edgy titles including Anora and Parasite, and Artificial could possibly give the distributor another ambitious film tied to one of the most closely watched technology stories in recent years.
