New York-based utility Con Edison asked customers in parts of Queens, the Bronx, Manhattan, Staten Island and Westchester to avoid using energy-intensive appliances until crews complete repairs during the heat wave.

The utility, which is part of Consolidated Edison, reduced voltage by 8% in certain areas, it said.

In the Riverdale area of the Bronx, Con Edison shut off power to some customers temporarily to prevent more extended outages.

The company said late Thursday that crews have restored service to nearly 31,000 customers who were affected by scattered outages. There are about 16,000 customers without power in Staten Island, the Bronx, and Queens. Con Edison has about 3.63 million total electric customers.

Grid manager PJM Interconnection said in a morning post on X that it forecasts peak electricity usage Thursday of 166,241 megawatts in the PJM region, compared with total scheduled capacity of 172,780 megawatts.

PJM said Wednesday that its forecast for Thursday could exceed PJM's existing all-time summer hourly integrated peak of 165,563 megawatts, set in 2006.

PJM said Thursday afternoon that a maximum generation alert was issued for Friday. The forecasted peak load for Friday is 157,979 megawatts.
