IBM NYSE:IBM said Thursday it has expanded its quantum computing research through separate collaborations with the University of Chicago, Israel-based Qedma Quantum Computing and Italian software company Algorithmiq.

IBM said researchers working with the University of Chicago completed a quantum calculation beyond the capabilities of conventional computers while using an error-correction technique that verified the accuracy of the result. The team encoded 70 logical qubits, a unit used to process quantum information, and completed the computation in about 15 minutes.

In another project, IBM and Qedma Quantum Computing used IBM's quantum systems alongside Qedma's QESEM error-mitigation software to study material physics that the company said remains difficult to model using classical computing methods. Error mitigation refers to techniques designed to reduce inaccuracies that arise during quantum calculations.

IBM also said its collaboration with Algorithmiq demonstrated a method for accurately simulating complex materials beyond the reach of traditional computers while validating the results. The company noted the research has remained on its Quantum Advantage Tracker for eight months without being surpassed by leading classical simulation approaches. Algorithmiq also released its Monoprop software as open source for the broader research community.
