Nigeria has joined the International Energy Agency as an associate member, bringing Africa's largest oil producer, into a network that represents more than 80% of global energy demand, the organisation said on Thursday.

The IEA's governing board unanimously approved Nigeria's entry.

Nigeria, home to more than 240 million people is one of Africa's largest economies.

The member of the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries is a major producer of gas as well as of oil, but faces many domestic energy challenges, including in expanding access to electricity and clean cooking solutions for millions of its citizens.
