Sony Interactive Entertainment said it would discontinue its PlayStation physical disc production for all new games released on its consoles, effective January 2028.
Following this date, new games will be available on PlayStation Store and at retailers in digital format only. The change will have no impact on games that have already been released or will be releasing prior to January 2028 in disc format.
The entertainment company said the transition was necessary to adapt to consumer trends as digital media outpaces physical discs.
Sony also said it will close its PlayStation Store on PS3 and PS Vita.
The company said the PlayStation Store on PS3 will close in select markets, including Mexico, Honduras and Nicaragua starting this year, and there will be global closures for PS3 and PS Vita next year.
The transition will allow Sony to focus its efforts on expanding PlayStation to newer devices, the company said.
