Retail Exit Code consultation 2026
Ofwat has today launched a consultation on proposed changes to the Retail Exit Code (REC), as part of its review of the business retail market.
The consultation proposes revisions to price and non-price protections for business customers. It does not affect household customers.
There are a range of protections for these customers, including price caps, which are set out in the Retail Exit Code (REC) and the Customer Protection Code of Practice. The proposed changes aim to protect the interests of current and future customers, wherever appropriate, by promoting effective competition.
Key proposals include an increase in allowed price caps for smaller business customers remaining on price-capped tariffs of approximately 4 to 4.5% before inflation, and the removal of explicit price cap protections for around 20,000 larger business customers (by annual consumption). Ancillary changes to non-price protections are also proposed.
The consultation closes at 5pm on Friday 14 August 2026. Further details are available at Ofwat's website: Consultations - Ofwat
