Contemporary Amperex Technology Co. Ltd., a battery company advancing lithium- and sodium-based energy storage technologies, has signed an agreement to supply its recently launched sodium battery storage systems to Western Europe. Under a memorandum of understanding with Alfen N.V. (ABHBY), a Dutch energy solutions provider, CATL plans to deliver 5 gigawatt-hours of its TENER system to markets including the Netherlands from 2027. The agreement represents the company's first planned deployment of sodium battery storage in Europe and could help CATL establish an early position in the region's emerging sodium-based storage market.
CATL launched the TENER system in late June as part of a dual-track strategy focused on developing both lithium and sodium battery technologies. The system replaces lithium with sodium as its main raw material, potentially broadening CATL's energy storage portfolio beyond conventional lithium-based products. CATL said the European project may also provide an opportunity to develop localized expertise in integrating sodium storage systems into regional power grids.
The European agreement follows a separate three-year contract with Beijing HyperStrong Technology Co., a major domestic power equipment manufacturer, covering 60 gigawatt-hours of the same sodium-based products. Together, the two commitments represent 65 gigawatt-hours of planned supply across China and Western Europe, although the contracts cover different delivery periods. Investors may view the agreements as early evidence of commercial interest in CATL's sodium technology as the company advances the platform alongside its existing lithium battery strategy.
