According to CNBC, U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer said President Donald Trump could use the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA) to prohibit or restrict trade with Spain, even though it is a member of the European Union. Greer said Trump may not pursue that step after what he described as a good recent meeting between Trump and Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez, following Trump’s earlier comments at a NATO summit in Ankara, Turkey, where he said he wanted to cut off all trade with Spain. Trump later told reporters on Air Force One that Spain had been “very generous” and said it had honored a request for “lots of payments,” though it was unclear what Spain had agreed to.
