Advanced Micro Devices NASDAQ:AMD shares climbed about 1.5% on Wednesday after the chipmaker entered a multi-billion-dollar agreement with artificial intelligence startup Anthropic to supply AI infrastructure and expand their strategic partnership.

Under the agreement, Anthropic will deploy up to two gigawatts of AMD's MI450 AI accelerators beginning in the first half of 2027. The rollout will also include AMD's Helios rack-scale systems featuring MI455X graphics processors, EPYC Venice central processing units, Pensando networking technology and ROCm software to support Anthropic's Claude AI models.

AMD also said it plans to invest up to $5 billion in Anthropic over time. In addition, the companies signed an engineering collaboration that will use Anthropic's AI models to help improve AMD's chip technology and computing performance.

The Wall Street Journal, which first reported the agreement, said AMD is also discussing financial support for Anthropic's future data center leases. Separately, KeyBanc estimated the full two-gigawatt deployment could generate about $27.2 billion in revenue for AMD, while noting the deal may strengthen the company's position in the market for AI accelerators.
