AMD NASDAQ:AMD landed one of its biggest AI wins yet after signing a multi-billion-dollar chip and investment deal with Anthropic, giving the chipmaker a major new customer for its next-generation accelerators.
Anthropic plans to deploy up to 2 gigawatts of AMD's MI450-based systems starting in the first half of 2027. The rollout will use AMD's Helios rack-scale platform, including MI455X GPUs, EPYC Venice CPUs, Pensando networking and ROCm software.
AMD designs processors and accelerators used in PCs, servers and AI data centers. The agreement gives it a stronger foothold against Nvidia NASDAQ:NVDA by showing that a leading AI lab is willing to deploy AMD hardware at gigawatt scale.
AMD also agreed to invest up to $5 billion in Anthropic, while KeyBanc estimates the full deployment could generate as much as $27.2 billion in revenue. The companies will also work together on engineering, with AMD using Claude models to improve chip performance.
