Intel (INTC, Financials), the semiconductor and computing company, has provided startup RosaicLabs with access to parts of its Atom processor technology, an unusual step for a company that has historically kept tight control over its x86 architecture.

RosaicLabs filed its first incorporation documents in Delaware in May. The startup is led by Amarjit Gill, a venture investor and chip executive who has previously worked with Intel CEO Lip-Bu Tan on other semiconductor ventures.

Intel is expected to provide Rosaic with register-transfer level code for Atom processors, which designers use to define chip functions. Atom technology is designed for lower-power computing and is commonly suited for mobile and edge applications.

The arrangement stands out because Intel has rarely licensed pieces of its x86 technology or shared Atom building blocks with outside companies.

The personal and investment ties between Tan and Gill could draw scrutiny as investors assess the strategic and governance implications of the deal.

At the same time, the move may signal a more flexible approach to monetizing Intel's intellectual property and expanding the reach of its processor technology.

Investors will now watch whether Intel broadens its licensing strategy and provides more details on the commercial terms of the Rosaic agreement.
